Spain spice up Day 1 at FIBA 3x3 Women's Series Mies

MIES (Switzerland) – Spain were the only team with a perfect 3-0 record on the opening day of the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series Mies in front of FIBA’s Headquarters on May 15, 2021.

The Team: Spain

The FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup 2019 runners-up made it rain on Day 1 with back-to-back victories over the Netherlands (20-18 at the buzzer), Hungary (16-14) and Romania (17-11).

The Shot: Sandra Ygueravide (Spain)

I said Spain beat the Netherlands at the buzzer. It started well for the Dutch with Ilse Kuijt dripping in finesse and tying the game at 18 with a few seconds to go. But Ms. Clutch Sandra Ygueravide answered with the big shot at the buzzer. The Women’s Series is BACK!

The Player: Marielle Giroud (Switzerland)

Switzerland upset Russia and Mongolia to finish 1st in Pool A and a lot of the credits needs to go to Marielle Giroud, who topped all players in scoring (23 in 3 games) and in rebounding (25). Special mention to her PG Evita Herminjard, who led highlights charts and finished 2nd in key assists.

The Stat: Sonia Ursu (Romania)

The Romanian star was more savage mentality than namaste (her motto) in her first game of the day against Hungary. She scored 10 points, including the 2 for the tie and the winner in overtime. She chipped in 7 rebounds and 6 highlights as well, the only triple five of the day.

The shock: Hungary

You may remember Hungary from their second-place finish at the 3x3 World Cup in 2019. For their return to the Women’s Series, Hungary got more Ls than Sergio Llull. Klaudia Papp had a few good drives and Cyesha Goree was second in rebounding but Hungary are out on Day 1 after 3 straight losses against Romania (16-18), Spain (14-16) and the Netherlands (15-20)

The Day 2 bracket:

Switzerland (1st in Pool A) vs. Winners of Netherlands (2nd in Pool B) - Poland (3rd in Pool A)
Spain (1st in Pool B) vs. Winners of Russia (2nd in Pool A) – Romania (3rd in Pool B)
